What is Real-Time Prescription Benefit, and why it matters
Real-Time Prescription Benefit (RTPB) surfaces a patient specific out-of-pocket cost at the exact moment a prescriber chooses a medication. That single piece of information changes the prescribing conversation and, ultimately, whether the patient fills the script.
How RTPB works
RTPB queries the patient pharmacy benefit in real time and returns the expected copay, deductible impact, and coverage status for the selected drug, along with covered alternatives. It happens inside the e-prescribing workflow in seconds, with no separate payer portal to log into.
RTPB versus formulary checks
A formulary check tells you whether a drug is covered and at what tier. RTPB goes further by returning the actual dollar amount the patient will pay, which can differ significantly even within the same tier depending on the patient plan and deductible status.
Why it drives adherence
The single biggest predictor of prescription abandonment is cost surprise at the pharmacy counter. When the prescriber and patient can see and discuss cost during the visit, they can choose an affordable, covered option together, and the patient is far more likely to actually pick up the medication.
